School board: Race has nothing to do with school closings

Now that the dust has settled on the announcement of which Charleston County schools will be closed, many parents are asking, "Why close schools that are predominately black?"

Read more stories on this subject in our consolodation topic page.It's an eyebrow-raising question to which the Charleston County School Board has responded that race has nothing to do with it and that these were the worst-performing and easiest schools to close.

On one hand it's very believable and should get these students to better-performing schools, and on the other it raises bad memories of the Jim Crow South.
