Underground explosions, fire rock downtown Savannah

Image by Franklin HeadleyImage by 20081229-savannah-fire.jpg Certainly an alarming image. An underground explosion shot flames out of three manhole covers on Bay Street at 8:39 a.m.

That's part of The Savannah Morning News's reporting on a mysterious fire that was probably caused by a "systems failure."

There's a lot of stories out there on this, but the Morning News has the best reporting, and WTOC 11 has some great pictures.

Power will likely be out to large sections of downtown for 24 hours.

And, perhaps the most bizarre side effect, is that since power to City Hall is out, so calls to the building are being routed to the police department, overwhelming them.
