The Italian tradition of street painting dates to the 16th century when artists would travel from town to town for religious festivals and transform the streets and public squares into temporary galleries for their works. ThePawleys Island Festival of Music and Artbrings Chalk Under the Oaks to the Lowcountry each year as a way to teach and promote the history of this lost art to all ages and levels of artists.
