Firefighter earns Medal of Valor for ocean rescue in 2014

Midway Fire Rescue Firefighter Shane Kingsford was awarded a Medal of Valor for his actions in 2014 when he rescued two people from drowning in the ocean while he was off duty.

Kingsford was notified about the award during a banquet earlier this month and was recognized by the Georgetown County Council on Jan. 27.

The Medal of Valor is not an annual award, but it is given in cases when someone “goes above and beyond, and places their life in extreme danger to make a rescue,” said Chief Doug Eggiman.
