HTC warns of internet pop-up scam

An online pop-up scam advertising a fake “security breach” is targeting HTC Internet customers, and consumers are warned not to click on the pop-up.

Nicole Hyman, senor marketing coordinator for HTC, said the pop-up screen is disguised as a warning to mislead customers into believing there has been a critical security breach on thier computer. There is a toll-free number in the warning message that directs customers to call for immediate assistance, and those that answer the phone are posing as Microsoft support personnel.

The pop-up and people answering the toll-free number are not associated with HTC, Hyman said. She advises people not to give any personal information over the phone to the scammers.
