Socastee’s Thompson to sign with Mariners, forgo Coastal Carolina commitment

Back in November, Dylan Thompson had a signing ceremony at Socastee recognizing his commitment to the Coastal Carolina baseball program.

Tuesday, he’ll have a different kind of signing ceremony.

The Braves pitcher and his family needed less than a week to decide pro baseball should happen sooner rather than later. He will ink with the Seattle Mariners organization, a move that overrides his previous one to the Chanticleers.

The news was first reported by WBTW, and Thompson – who was in Seattle Monday night – confirmed it via text message.

It was a move both draft experts and CCU coach Gary Gilmore expected. They recognized his position in the draft and the slot money (approximately $448,000) garnered because of it.
