Two people shot, suspect took his own life in Conway standoff

A suspect in a shooting that left two people injured had dementia and had not been taking his medication, according to police reports of the standoff that ended when the man took his own life.

Officers were called about 12 p.m. Sunday to Lighthouse Church Road for reports of a shooting, according to Horry County police Lt. Raul Denis. Another person who had been inside the house had fled when the suspect pointed the gun at her. She got in her car and urged a nearby witness and infant to get in the car. They called 911 and then went to the end of the road to await police, according to the report.

As the first officer pulled on to the road, they waved him down and said the suspect “was off his meds.” More officers from Horry County and Conway arrived, and authorities learned that two people inside, a 39-year-old man and a 47-year-old woman, had locked themselves in a bathroom. They told dispatchers they thought the suspect was in another part of the house
