S.C. Employment improves again to best in 5 years
Following September's 7.9% good news, South Carolina's unemployment improved in October to reach 7.5%.
That's the lowest rate since September 2008.
The number of unemployed persons fell by 7,457, and those employed increased 3,465. The labor force fell by 3,992 persons.
South Carolina’s largest gains were in Manufacturing (+2,600); Construction (+1,800); and Educational and Health Services (+1,800); with smaller growth in Financial Activities (+400) and Information (+300). Declines were reported in Other Services (-1,100); Professional and Business Services (-900); and Leisure and Hospitality (-900); largely related to declines in the tourism industry. Smaller drops were seen in Government (-300) and Trade, Transportation and Utilities (-100).
At the local level:
- Charleston County: Decreased to 5.8% from 6%
- Dorchester County: Decreased to 6% from 6.4%
- Berkeley County: Decreased to 6.5% from 6.8%
- Horry County: Increased to 7.7% from 7.6%
- Georgetown County: Stayed at 7.5%
- Florence County: Decreased to 8.5% from 8.8%
- Beaufort County: Decreased to 6.3% from 6.7%
