AmeriHealth Caritas Announces Leadership Changes for its S.C. Medicaid Plan

Rebecca Engelman Returning to Select Health as Market President

AmeriHealth Caritas, a national leader in Medicaid managed care and other health care solutions for those most in need, announced a leadership change for its Medicaid plan in South Carolina. Rebecca Engelman, currently market president for AmeriHealth Caritas Louisiana, is returning to Select Health of South Carolina to become its market president. Engelman will report to J. Michael Jernigan, regional president for AmeriHealth Caritas.

Engelman, who has led AmeriHealth Caritas Louisiana since January 2013, previously spent 16 years at Select Health in multiple leadership roles, eventually rising to the position of vice president, operations. A nurse by training, Engelman began her career at three hospitals in Florida, working in both surgical units and emergency rooms. She received a master’s degree in nursing administration with honors from the Medical University of South Carolina.

Engelman succeeds Cindy Helling, who is stepping down after 20 years at Select Health. Helling joined Select Health in its first year in business and continued to lead the health plan after its acquisition by AmeriHealth Caritas in 1999. She will be taking on a new part-time role supporting AmeriHealth Caritas’ growth in other markets.

“We are very fortunate to have someone with Rebecca’s experience and knowledge of our market ready to continue the legacy that Select Health has built. It has a bright future ahead under Rebecca’s leadership,” said Jernigan. “We greatly appreciate all of Cindy’s work to turn Select Health’s First Choice Medicaid plan into the largest such plan in South Carolina, and wish her well in her new role.”

“My nearly 20 years in South Carolina were some of the best of my life, both professionally and personally. While I enjoyed my time in Louisiana, I look forward to returning to the Palmetto State for this next stage of my career,” said Engelman.
