The Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort is adding a solar system to provide some 26 kilowatts of solar power for a total of 34,000 annual kilowatt hours of energy for the project.

Two Charleston companies will be doing the work: Hannah Solar Government Services was awarded a subcontract from the Hightower Construction Company for the design and construction of a solar photovoltaic solar system.

"This solar energy project shows the continued commitment of the Department of Defense in leading the way in renewable energy for America," said Dave McNeil, CEO of Hannah Solar Government Services.

The Pew Charitable Trusts reports that the DoD clean energy investments increased 300 percent between 2006 and 2009, from $400 million to $1.2 billion.

The DoD is aiming for 25 percent of its energy to come from renewable sources by 2025.
