Take in some of the Lowcountry's mild winters and be part of a great national event this weekend, and all for free.

Starting Saturday, January 14, and going until Monday the 16th, admission to all national parks around the country will be free.

Sadly, there are none in the Beaufort area, but we couldn't think of a better reason for a road trip. Get out of town and explore the great state of South Carolina, all of its natural beauty, and rich history.

And, don't forget that just across the Savannah River is the Fort Pulaski National Monument.

The United States National Parks Service is offering the free admission not just this coming weekend but throughout the year.

And mark your calendar for these fee-free dates in 2012:

  • January 14-16: Martin Luther King Jr. weekend
  • April 21-29: National Park Week
  • June 9: Get Outdoors Day
  • September 29: National Public Lands Day
  • November 10-12: Veterans Day weekend
