Five rescued from St. Helena Sound after boat sinks
The Coast Guard rescued five people near Otter Island in St. Helena Sound, Wednesday, after their boat sank.
Rescued were two adults, and three children.
Search and rescue controllers from Coast Guard Sector Charleston were notified at 10:02 p.m., Tuesday, from local 911-dispatch reporting a mayday distress near Otter Island in St. Helena Sound.
A Coast Guard Station Charleston 25-foot rescue boat crew and an Air Facility Charleston MH-65 Dolphin rescue helicopter crew were launched. The helicopter rescue crew safely hoisted the 5 boaters at 12:14 a.m., Wednesday, and transported them to Charleston Executive Airport.
There were no reports of injuries.
What happened? Why did the boat sink? Was it the bad weather or was it a technical problem to the boat? It's great that everyone is fine now, things could have been a lot different, especially because there were also children involved. This one of the reasons why it's always good to have some spare replacement parts for boats on board or do some periodical checks to make sure your boat is in shape at any moment.
