Bar taps at Wren in downtown Beaufort. Many area businesses already close by 2 a.m.

Update April 14: Port Royal Town Council has approved a 2 a.m. closing time for establishments serving alcohol.

With Port Royal moving this way, there's a strong chance Beaufort will follow suit to stop any drunken bar hoping.

First reporting February 25: At the recent Beaufort-Port Royal joint council meeting the idea of moving up last call for alcohol to 2 a.m. in Port Royal had some traction.

State law already sets a 2 a.m. limit for liquor and the City of Beaufort may join in Port Royal's move for an earlier limit on beer and wine.

Update March 3: Debate and discussion is continuing and at the Wednesday Port Royal Town Council meeting the idea was still very much alive.

However a clear direction on how to regulate late-night problem spots was not.
