Bill would end DUI moped exemption in South Carolina

Quite possibly the coolest moped ever.

In the past, many DUI cases were thrown out of court because the allegedly drunk drivers were on mopeds, with were exempt from South Carolina motor-vehicle laws ... until now.

On Wednesday, a bill was approved in committee that would re-categorize mopeds as motor vehicles, at least where drinking-and-driving is concerned.

Mopeds tend to be popular choices for those who have a history of drunken driving, particularly because in our state, you don't need a driver's license to operate a moped. While DUI offenders with suspended licenses are still legally able to drive mopeds, they will no longer be exempt from South Carolina's driving-under-the-influence laws.
