Beaufort County aims to simplify car tax payments

Rejoice: Forking over a bit of cash to Beaufort County to pay your annual vehicle tax just got a little bit easier, as you'll no longer need to have the tax bill in your possession to pay.

Starting Monday, you will be able to search by your name, PIN, or AIN to find your bill and pay; previously you had to enter your PIN, license plate number, and exact amount of taxes.

While it's not as exciting as an elimination of taxation all together, anything that makes dealing with taxes easier is always welcome.

But a word to the wise: If your car taxes are due (or past due), I wouldn't hold out for a simpler new system that may well have a substantial hiccup or two shortly after launch — I never trust newly "improved" systems, particularly if a government is doing the steering.

(Oh, and we're asking if this front-end improvement will also be part of a fix to help alleviate any of the issues that the county has had sending out tax bills on the back end.)

At any rate, here's the full release:

Easier Search for Vehicle Bill Info, Payments at County Website

A new search component that offers an easier way to look up and pay your vehicle tax bills in Beaufort County goes online Monday.

County officials have upgraded a portion of the County website to simplify the procedure. Beginning Monday, you will be able to search by your name, PIN, or AIN. Previously, you had to enter your PIN, license plate number, and exact amount of taxes. This allows a taxpayer to pay the motor vehicle tax bill without having a bill in their hands, and County staffers hope it will help reduce processing errors.

Vehicle taxes can be paid by selecting the button for "Pay Taxes Online" on the homepage of www.bcgov.net
