Statewide school budget cuts would hurt Beaufort County

The South Carolina house of Representatives approved a bill last Friday which would allow lawmakers to trim more than 10% off local and county government budgets.

State officials are considering across the board budget cuts which, if approved by the senate, could result in losses totaling over $20 million to the state-wide county government fund. Those cuts could equate to losses of around $1 million for Beaufort County's government, and leave local officials with a choice of either raising residents' taxes to compensate, or cutting services usually provided by the county.
