CHARLESTON, SC –Thirteen million kids will be bullied in the U.S. this year. This is just one of the startling statistics viewers will learn from a new documentary on bullying. WINGS for kids wants to get people talking about this issue, and is hosting a special screening of “Bully” at 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 22 at the Terrace Theater.
Join WINGS staffers and supporters on opening weekend to learn how to prevent kids from being bullied or bullying others. The screening will include brief remarks by CEO Bridget Laird, and attendees will receive a complimentary anti-bullying kit. Tickets are being offered for a discounted price of $5 (regular $7) at the box office. To end the event on a sweet note, the Cupcake van will be on-site to wrap up the event with free cupcakes for attendees.
WINGS’ Laird explains: “Bullying is much more prevalent than most people think, so this documentary will really open up a lot of people’s eyes to the magnitude of this problem.”
WINGS for kids teaches Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) techniques to hundreds of at-risk students in the Charleston area in an after school setting. These same skills can be applied to the discussion on bullying.
The non-profit—which is expanding to Atlanta in August—has compiled numerous lessons into a “Ready, Set, Soar with SEL—a DIY Social Emotional Learning Kit,” which can be downloaded from their website. Kits will be available at the screening. SEL has been proven to improve kids’ self confidence, reduce anxiety and give them tools to resolve differences with their peers.
