A new hospital at Carnes Crossroads would have 50 beds that were transfered from Roper’s downtown facility.

The aim is to provide better care in Berkeley and to stop excessive driving by patients: Some 25,800 people came from Berkeley County to a Roper hospital for outpatient care.

A press release said:
The new hospital, which calls for the transfer of 50 existing beds from Roper’s downtown facility, helps redistribute hospital beds to better serve the emerging population centers within the greater Charleston area. Carnes Crossroads is emerging as the population epicenter in Berkeley County with more than 104,370 residents within a 7-mile radius of the proposed hospital site.

The Post and Courier comments on how the move is likely in response to rival Trident Health System's move to build a 50-bed hospital in nearby Moncks Corner.
