Google’s doodle team is on the hunt for the best K-12 doodler (Update: SC student in the running)

Update May 7, 2012: A North Charleston student has been selected as one of 50 K-12 student finalists to be featured on Google's homepage in the "Google Doodle" competition.

In the Grade 4-5 bracket, John W's drawing (pictured) has been selected as a finalist from more than 114,000 entries.

John said, "My picture expresses the theme by depicting a scene of a 1970s jazz band. I chose this drawing because I enjoy the styles and sounds of this era. I would love to be able to travel in time to visit a city like New Orleans and watch a jazz band."

You can vote for his drawing over here.

The winning Doodle will be displayed on Google's homepage. In addition, the doodler will take home a $30,000 college scholarship and a $50,000 technology grant for his or her school.

The theme for this year's contest was "If I could travel in time, I'd visit...". That could mean visiting a past, present, or future setting—whether it's traveling back in time to the signing of the Declaration of Independence, to the future to witness everyday space travel, or to just a few moments ago to relive a poignant experience.

Voting ends May 10 with the five highest ranked winners from each category and a national winner being announced May 18, 2012.

First Report March 15, 2012: Google is inviting K-12 students across the U.S. to submit their own version of the Google logo to the Doodle 4 Google contest.

This year’s theme is “If I could travel in time, I’d visit...,” and the prizes are high stakes.  In addition to seeing his or her doodle displayed on their homepage in May, the winner will also receive a $30,000 college scholarship and a $50,000 technology grant for his or her school.
