The weekend round-up: Coming at you like a speeding Daschund

Well here it is, the first full weekend of the new year.

The Event Calendar is finally beginning to beef back up and the monotony of posting about holiday themed activities is now 358 days away.

This weekend is all about hitting the streets. Friday evening marks the first art walk of 2011 which means plenty of new exhibits. One to take particular note of is Bill Mead's solo exhibit, “There’s Always Room for Jell-O” opening at SCOOP Studios. On Sunday, stroll along King Street for some shopping, eating and people watching during the ever popular Second Sunday on King series. Use this voucher to score two hours of free parking while you're at it.

In other street news, a European style street food restaurant is opening up shop this Saturday on George Street. Patat Spot Friet & Falafel will feature hand cut Patat Friet, Dutch style potato fries and handmade Falafel. Yum.

After cruising King Street on Sunday afternoon, be sure you swing by downtown Charleston's Mellow Mushroom as they celebrate their 10th anniversary with an over-the-top bluegrass bash from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m.

To make up for South Carolina's lack of ice, you can head out to the rink and catch a Stingray's hockey game on Friday, Saturday or Sunday. I'm going to go ahead and suggest you pick Saturday, because that means you'll get to witness the 1st Annual Weiner Dog Race.

  • There's even more events posted on our complete Event Calendar. To top off your weekend planning, be sure to check it with the Charleston City Paper's weekend round-up.
