The City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs is pleased to announce the installation of 'Polaridad Complementaria: Recent Works from Cuba,' an exhibition that introduces North America to the new generation of influential artists from Cuba.

Here's more on the upcoming exhibit:

Polaridad Complementaria: Recent Works from Cuba is a major exhibition developed by the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo Wifredo Lam, Havana, offering audiences the opportunity to become acquainted with the island’s current artistic production. With more than 50 works of painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, video, and installation art by 27 Cuban artists, this exhibition attests to the aesthetic and conceptual level that characterizes Cuban art today. The participants are mainly young artists who have attained international acknowledgement; the majority of them have taken part in fairs and biennals abroad, all have exhibited in Europe and Latin American and several in the United States, among them René Peña, Abel Barroso, Aimeé García, Yoan Capote, Roberto Fabelo, Luis Cabrera and Angel Ramírez.

Developed by Margarita Sánchez and Jorge Fernández, curator and director at the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo Wifredo Lam, Havana, and the Havana Biennal, the exhibition illustrates the features that have defined Cuban artistic production in recent years, especially the interest in focusing on the Cuban context in a reflexive manner with the languages in fashion. Polaridad Complementaria aims to create a dialogue by examining and comparing Cuba's political, historical, and common cultural links with the United States.

Polaridad Complementaria will be on view at The City Gallery at Waterfront Park from February 4th, through March 28, and the public is invited to an opening reception on February 4th from 6 to 8 p.m.
