Update: While the flight is free for veterans, the cost is about $60,000 per plane. Donations are needed to offset the cost of the upcoming flight from Myrtle Beach to Washington DC.
Personalities from WPDE NewsChannel 15 and Movin 94.5 and Easy Radio, along with members of the Grand Strand chapter of Honor Flight will be accepting monetary donations from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 6th at Wholesale Furniture at 1951 Mister Joe White Avenue in Myrtle Beach.
First report, September 19, 2011: The Myrtle Beach chapter of Honor Flight is still looking for sixteen World War II veterans and five guardians to take a trip to Washington DC to visit the newly built memorial.
As reported by WMBF, the flight will leave Myrtle Beach International Airport on October 26, 2011. According to the Honor Flight organization, one thousand World War II veterans die every day. It is their mission to get as many of those remaining to see the memorial as possible.
Veterans travel for free and guardians are required to make a $500 tax-deductible donation to cover their expenses. Guardians can be friends, relatives, or caregivers to a veteran. They can also just be volunteers interested in the cause. Here is the application for veterans, and here it for guardians.
