The Spirit of Caring Golf Tournament raises money to help address the national nursing shortage and minimize its impact in our local community. This year, Roper St. Francis Healthcare will hold its Spirit of Caring Golf Tournament at the prestigious Daniel Island Golf Club on Tuesday, May 8th.

Over the past four years, RSFH has raised nearly $175,000 to provide much needed financial assistance to students entering the profession as well as professional nurses seeking an advanced degree in the field — approximately 200 students.

“Continued support of nursing scholarships is vital to the recruitment and retention of exceptional nurses in our system who directly impact clinical outcomes,” said Lisa Irvin, RN, Roper Hospital Vice President of Nursing. “With nearly one third of the nursing workforce in the United States projected to retire in the next 15 years, sustaining scholarship programs will be even more important in the future.”

For the first time, play will take place on two nationally-recognized courses, Ralston Creek and Beresford. The courses were designed by Rees Jones and Tom Fazio, and The Ralston Creek course is home to the PGA Nationwide Tour Championship 2009-2011.

The entry fee for each foursome is $1,600. There also are several opportunities for sponsorships. For more information on registration or sponsorship call Joan Wherley at (843) 724-2193.

Participants will receive giveaways, a hot brunch buffet and a 19th hole reception complete with cocktails, heavy hors d’oeuvres, awards ceremony and a silent auction. Registration begins at 10 a.m., with a shotgun start at 11:30 a.m. Since play will take place on two courses this year, teams will be assigned to a course based on the combined team handicap.

Prizes will be given to first, second and third place teams and also for longest drive, closest to the pin and hole-in-one contests. Deadline for registration is Thursday, April 15.
