The College of Charleston will be hosting and participating in numerous events in honor of the life, times and accomplishments of the late Martin Luther King, Jr.
Here's what the College has planned in the upcoming weeks:
On Friday, January 15, the Center for Civic Engagement and the Office of Multicultural Student Programs and Services will host a Unity Fair from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Stern Student Center Ballroom. The program will include culturally diverse songs and dances.
On Sunday, January 17, the Center for Civic Engagement and the Office of Multicultural Student Programs and Services will host “I Have a Dream… Revamp.” The event will be in the Albert Simons Center for the Arts Recital Hall from 2:30 to 5:00 p.m. The presentation will depict the lives of influential people in Dr. King’s journey as well as having a creative interpretation of Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech.
On Monday, January 18, the MLK Challenge will return beginning at 9:30 a.m. Teams of students will go out into the Charleston area to complete 15 service projects in just six hours with $75 and a van. Teams will meet in the Stern Center Ballroom. This event is sponsored by the Center for Civic Engagement and the Office of Multicultural Student Programs and Services. The “Face of A King: As Revealed Through the Black Press” exhibit will be on display in the Stern Student Center from January 14-31. This exhibition explores the life and impact of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as depicted in various periodicals of the 1960’s. The Avery Institute originally presented the display in 2008 in observance of the 40th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. King. Curtis Franks served as curator for the exhibit.
On Tuesday, January 19, the College will have a presence at the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Business and Professional Breakfast, sponsored by the YWCA of Greater Charleston. School of Education, Health, and Human Performance Dean Fran Welch will also participate in the YWCA’s parade, youth “shoot out” and concert.
The Halsey Gallery of Contemporary Art will be doing a book drive starting on Monday, January 18 to coincide with Martin Luther King Day and the opening of their new exhibition. The new exhibit, Jonathan Torgovnik -- Intended Consequences: Rwandan Children Born of Rape & Heather McClintock -- The Innocents: Casualties of the Civil War in Northern Uganda are indirectly related to MLK day.
