Sweetgrass basket makers brace for change

Sweetgrass basket makers are bracing for the imminent changes that are coming from the road widening project along a 2.5 mile stretch of U.S. Highway 17.

Known as the "sweetgrass corridor" for the numerous family-owned and operated roadside basket stands, many merchants are viewing the widening project as a double edged sword. To allow drivers to pull of the busy road and stop at a stand, 30-foot-wide "curb cuts" will be built onto the side of the road. Sidewalks and gutters will also transform the corridor's flow and feel.

Basket makers continue to be included in the planning of the new road, and hopefully through compromise and patience the smoother flow of traffic will benefit all involved.
