“Onions, peppers, tomatoes and collards” are just a few of the veggies that Estelle G. Greene is hoping to plant in her garden this year.

Estelle was all ears at this Saturday's Community Garden Workshop that included a formal presentation followed by a hands-on gardening demonstration led by Bobby Wilson, Coordinator of the Atlanta Urban Gardening Program and President of the American Community Gardening Association.

Participants learned how to organize a community garden in their own neighborhoods and were given all of the steps to ensure that their project will have long-term success.

Jennifer Maxwell from Sullivan’s Island is currently on the Board of Directors for the Charleston Children’s Garden and attended the workshop to learn new gardening techniques and community building strategies.

Many were there just to learn some of the basics to gardening and get their own Line Street Garden plots started. The workshop attracted over 20 adults and youth from Charleston, Mt. Pleasant, Sullivan’s Island, and West Ashley, all of which learned about gardening tricks such as using worm castings, planting vine crops in mounds, and using corn stalks to support pole bean runners.
