Update April 24: This pretty much says it all:

Update March 30: The Mellow Mushroom Avondale Pizza Plunge was not only a huge success - it was also one of the best food fights that Charleston has ever seen.

Enthusiastic, costumed contestants filed into the restaurant on Wednesday and were up to their elbows in pizza once the buzzer sounded. Two 50-foot long pizzas were reduced to doughy smithereens in three shorts minutes, with two grand prize winners walking away with free Mellow Mushroom pizza for a year.

If you didn't happen to be one of the plungers or innocent bystanders, take a look through the slideshow above to check out the madness.

First reporting: Charleston's most "theatrical" restaurant, Mellow Mushroom Avondale, will be center stage on Wednesday, March 28, when they celebrate their first anniversary as only the avant garde pizzeria could: by giving guests a chance to win free pizza for one year in the inaugural pizza plunge.

When the clock strikes 6 p.m., 80 lucky participants will get the opportunity to dress up in goggles, aprons, gloves, and more, in order to tear through more than 100 feet of pizza for three minutes collecting random tokens that will be baked throughout the thick doughy pizza. Once the marinara stops flying, the value of all the tokens will be revealed, and two lucky guests will win free pizza for one year. There will also be prizes for best-dressed contestant.

After the pizza plunge, the party will continue with a DJ spinning until late night. Drink and food specials will be served all night.

The pizza plunge is free to enter, but participants should register by emailing jonah@mellowmushroomchs.com.
