Organ donations rates among the lowest here in South Carolina

The Post and Courier reports that South Carolina has among the lowest rates in the country for enrollment on Matchingdonors.com, the largest living donor database in the world.

Mathingdonors.com CEO Paul Dooley attributes the low numbers to the South's lack of awareness of the Boston-based website, while a professor of surgery at MUSC, said the lack of participation may be attributed to patients' education level.

Whatever the case may be, people should be aware of this non-profit site because the average waiting time for donors is only six months - far shorter than the average waiting time of five years on federal registries.
