GCEC awards scholarships

The Greater Charleston Empowerment Corp. is going to help nine high school students in its neighborhoods make it through college.

From the Charleston Regional Business Journal:

The students who received 2008 GCEC scholarships are Melvin Brown, Shemeka Conyers, Felicia Fleming, Kimberly Haynes, Carlin Nelson, Andrew Rambert, Carmisha Sheppard, Sykeithia Simmons and Ashley Tucker.

“We’re grateful to Rhodia, Magnolia and Cherokee for their generous contributions to fund scholarships for students who have financial need, demonstrated strong academic achievement, enrolled in an accredited institution of higher learning, and reside in one of the 31 neighborhoods comprising the Empowerment Corp.,” said Lonnie Gleaton, chair of the GCEC scholarship committee.
