New publisher at the Post and Courier

The Post and Courier is changing. Larry Tarleton, the publisher, retires March 31. He will be replaced by Bill Hawkins, a longtime newspaperman with extensive experience.

You can sense the Post and Courier is looking for new direction. They have had significant buyouts and cost struggles, they have slimmed their coverage and put more energy into their Web site -- in short, they are facing the same issues every major newspaper faces: meeting the challenges of a new media age with innovation and effective stewardship.

The Post and Courier is one of the oldest printed newspapers in the country. It will be interesting to watch as they shift their strategies and incorporate new methods. We wish them well and will keep you posted as information becomes available.

Dan Herres, the president of the Evening Post Publishing Newspaper Group made this statement today:

"This is a new era for our company and I think Hawkins is the ideal choice to lead our newspaper at a time of unprecedented innovation and change," Herres said. "His leadership skills and impressive news background matches our goal of assuring that The Post and Courier will remain the trusted and dominant source of news and information in the Lowcountry," Herres said.
