S.C. unemployment rate dips, but for the wrong reasons

For the first time since January 2008, South Carolina's unemployment rate dipped in July.

Read more stories on this subject in our unemployment topic page.The latest statewide number is 11.8%, down from June's 12.1%. And the Charleston-metro area fell from 10.2% to 9.8%.

However, it's not all good news. The number of jobs in South Carolina actually fell by some 30,000 and the unemployment rate only managed to improve as more people gave up the search for work.
