Under new permit rules unveiled this week by the Department of Transportation, South Carolina trucks that haul international shipping containers may now carry up to 100,000 pounds.

According to the post in the Charleston Regional Business Journal, previously, shipping containers in South Carolina were allowed to weigh only 90,000 pounds. The new weight allowance will make the Port of Charleston and other S.C. industries, including agriculture and recycling, more competitive.

In fact, SPA Chief Commercial Officer Paul McClintock said the new permit structure could increase export business at the port by 30% or 40%.
