SCDOT to close four rest areas

The South Carolina Department of Transportation is closing four interstate rest areas this week to cut costs.

The rest stops include: I-95 in Florence County located at mile marker 170 (north and southbound lanes), I-85 in Cherokee County located at mile marker 89, and I-26 in Berkeley County at mile marker 202

The closings were based on age, condition of the areas, traffic counts, and the availability of other restrooms and truck parking nearby. All three rest areas being closed were either in need of expensive renovations or were not bringing in enough daily traffic to remain profitable.  SCDOT says that the closings will have minimal impact on the public.

The rest area on I-26 in Berkeley County, the oldest of the facilities scheduled for closing, will officially be closed but SCDOT will have the option of re-opening it temporarily in the event of a hurricane evacuation.
