Charleston sheriff Al Cannon arrested, charged with assault and battery

Charleston County Sheriff J. Al Cannon Jr.

Charleston County Sheriff Al Cannon was charged with assault and battery following an investigation by the State Law Enforcement Department over a January incident in which Cannon allegedly slapped a handcuffed suspect.

Specifically, Cannon was charged with third-degree assault and battery which carries a penalty of up to $500 or 30 days in jail.

Cannon was released shortly after being charged on a $0 bond.

Many reports abound, but I'll suggest The Post and Courier's (read it here; paywall) or a shorter version at NBC News 2.
