Composer, former instructor accused of child porn (Update: Details, inflated resume)

Fernando Rivas.

Update: Rivas has requested a bench-trial.

First reporting: A 2009 article in the Charleston City Paper about Fernando Rivas read, "one of America's leading composers for children's television," and indeed he is noted for work producing Sesame Street songs.

Today the Emmy-winning composer and former instructor at Porter-Gaud School plead not guilty to child pornography production.

Really an awful string of child abuse news coming out of Charleston.

Update November 23: Following the arrest news of Rivas, Charleston City Paper Managing Editor Chris Haire has penned a reaction.

That piece is largely in response to Rivas having been a contributor to the paper, and Haire also spends time on the wake of child abuse news — his piece is worth a read to see the reaction from those in the media when someone more-or-less "inside" becomes tainted (and it's worth reminding again that Rivas is only accused and has not been convicted of anything). Take a read here.

Update November 26: More details have emerged on the Rivas case including the allegation that he photographed a naked four-year-old girl in handcuffs, The Post and Courier also notes that Rivas' assertion that he won two Emmys can't yet be substantiated.
