With the help of a $105,000 state grant, S.C. Public Railways is taking strides toward reducing their diesel emission.

Replacement parts were put into two of S.C. Public Railway's locomotives which will cut down on the particulate matter from those engines by 31% and reduce nitrogen oxides by about 52%. There are still eight other locomotives in the fleet that need to be upgraded, but it's a good starting point.

The Department of Health and Environmental Control is encouraging the upgrades by matching funds through a special grant program.
