Charleston native Robert F. Furchgott's research into high blood pressure and heart disease not only won him a Nobel prize in 1998 but also made Viagra possible.

He died at the age of 92 on Tuesday, May 19, in Seattle.

The New York Times and The Post and Courier both have excellent pieces on the man.
