Cold weather wreaks havoc on I-26 asphalt, motorist's cars

The bout of cold weather that descended upon the Lowcountry the past few weeks sped up a process of deterioration on a stretch of Interstate 26 asphalt that is now causing damage to unsuspecting drivers.

The asphalt is over 10 years old and has reached the end of its life cycle, and in turn is sending a hailstorm of rock debris flying all over the road.

The good news is that the Department of Transportation has secured $6.35 million to resurface the problematic stretch of road from the Summerville exit to the concrete sections in North Charleston, but crews won't be able to get to work until the temperatures rise later this spring.

The Post and Courier has the story.
