A Pennsylvania man drowned at Isle of Palms while near a sandbar near 4th Avenue around 1 p.m. Sunday.

Though it's not clear how the 69-year-old man would up drowning, sandbars can generate strong rip tides. The National Weather Service has excellent tips on surviving one. The gist? Swim to the side, don't fight the current.
