Last evening, Tuesday, March 20th Myrtle Beach Mayor John Rhodes gave his annual state of the city address. Speaking about the economic outlook of Myrtle Beach, what has been done and what needs to be done.
In a nutshell, Rhodes believes we as a community have fared pretty well during the economic downturn. The city is concerned over the real estate market in the area, getting the Myrtle Beach-as-a-travel destination word out to markets where the 1% sales tax money has yet to purchase ad spots, and how new attractions (such as the SkyWheel) have helped keep the area moving forward during this tough economy.
“I believe this may have been the busiest March weekend we’ve ever had, and the city is pleased to be part of making that possible.”
Rhodes did point out the improved growth in non-tourism related industry. Rhodes spoke with WMBF News after the speech and seemed to poo poo the thought of sometime soon moving towards a not-so-tourist centered Myrtle Beach, "Right now, this tourism is the industry of Myrtle Beach and the grand strand, and it's not going to change."
