Unemployment: South Carolina records highest number yet

Well, I hope you enjoyed that little job news from this morning, because the latest unemployment numbers are in. And they won't make you smile.

12.6% is the magic number for January.

Keen readers will remember that's the same number from December, but officials say the rate was actually 12.4%. Still the raw count is higher at 273,455 unemployed. Meanwhile the national rate fell the same amount in the opposite direction from 10% to 9.7%

Almost all sectors of the S.C. job market trimmed jobs over the month, with financial and natural resources being the only deviators. They added 1,000 jobs combined.

In all the Charleston metro area faired relatively well:

  • Charleston County: 10.6%
  • Berkeley County: 11.3%
  • Dorchester County: 10.9%

Allendale and Marion counties tied for the highest at 24.3%.
