The South Carolina Department of Transportation has concluded its public comment period for the controversial plan to finish I-526 across Johns and James islands.

And on Thursday, October 14, the results will be unveiled at the Charleston Country Council Finance Committee meeting. While there is no opportunity for public comment at the meeting, opponents of the road plan are planning to turn out en masse as a show of solidarity and opposition.

Details from an e-mailed announcement are below:

SCDOT's public comment period ended last Thursday at noon. HUNDREDS of comments were submitted against 526 — thank you everyone!
Nevertheless, SCDOT recently stated that there are at least as many people in favor of the road as opposed. Please plan to come hear SCDOT present the official results to Charleston County Council on October 14 at 4:15 PM. 4045 Bridge View Drive, North Charleston, 29405 Public Services Building, B225 Council Committee Room This meeting is incredibly important -- one of the most important we will ever have the chance to attend.

Charleston County Council asked SCDOT to start this project, and they are the only ones who can ask SCDOT to end it.
We MUST let County Council know we are active, we are engaged, and we are paying attention. There will not be an opportunity for us to speak at this meeting because it will be part of the finance committee.  Our only voice will be our numbers, and this must be the most well-attended finance committee meeting in the history of Charleston County.
Additionally, at least two councilmembers will present alternate plans for 526.  Although no votes are planned at this time, this council has been precarious in the past, and a vote is absolutely possible. If you haven't already, please remember to write all 9 Charleston County councilmembers -- plus 12 other important elected officials -- by using this form: > http://capwiz.com/scccl/issues/alert/?alertid=16728576
