All the talk of adding Norfolk Southern rail service to the new port has angered North Charleston enough to threaten legal action.

Under an agreement struck between the city and the State Ports Authority, no rail was to be run in through the old Navy shipyard to the northern end of the new port. 

But after last year's record gas prices, politicians and citizens have been advocating more rail access. 

The argument is: Not only would the embattled Charleston ports be better connected and have more resistance to high oil prices, but it would reduce future truck traffic on the already-congested Interstate 26.
