Horry County Schools has named Carolina Forest High School's musical director, Kraig McBroom teacher of the year for 2011-2012.

McBroom defeated some stiff competition for this prestigious award. The four other finalist were Pam Petty of Burgess Elementary SchoolAmy Spivey of Kingston Elementary SchoolAngela Rowehl of Myrtle Beach Intermediate School; and Donna Satterley of Waccamaw Elementary School. McBroom will go on to represent Horry County in the State Teacher of the Year competition.

According to Horry County schools, when asked to write about his teaching philosophy, McBroom had this to say:

"I feel extremely privileged to represent the teaching profession at a time of such uncertainty and concern about the future of education in our country.  We as educators must ALWAYS put what is BEST for the children as our top priority.  Our school district includes such a diverse student population, and we must keep aware of the fact that every child does not learn in the same manner.  What worked ten years ago probably needs to be packed away and locked in a closet.  Yes, the basics are still the basics, but how we present the information in a time of technological advances is of the utmost importance.  Students play computer games where they must react seven times per second.  How can we expect to keep their minds involved with a continuance of “old school” teaching?  And I can say that because I was part of that “old school” education.  The day of long lectures and reading to students is gone – forever.  We must as educators find new ways to challenge their minds and their bodies.  Give them a reason to WANT to come to class and learn what we have to share."

McBroom has been teaching vocal music for over 30 years with 11 at Carolina Forest High School.  McBroom has been vocal director for Celebrate America and Big Band Swing  as well as for the Grand Strand’s vocal ensemble Vocal Edition. He is also currently the musical director for the Grand Strand’s longest running show High Steppin’ Country at Lakewood Camping Resort.  McBroom’s school choirs have won five consecutive National Championships at Showstoppers National Show Choir Invitational in Chicago.

A big congratulations goes out to Mr. McBroom and all the wonderful teachers in Horry County!
