Mount Pleasant's $183 million road-building campaign kicked off Monday with a groundbreaking ceremony for the six-lane widening of a stretch of U.S. Highway 17.

The six-lane widening will sum up to about $42 million and will alter the highway from the Isle of Palms Connector all the way to Darrell Creek Trail, a total of 5.5 miles.

Another part of the groundbreaking? A $57 million project that will run an overpass above Highway 17, connecting Interstate 526 with Hungryneck Boulevard.

The final part of the massive project is the widening of Highway 17 from the Ravenel Bridge to I-526, which will cost a hefty $84 million.

All of this road construction as well as construction that is currently occuring on U.S. 17 is scheduled to be completed during the spring of 2013.

All of the ongoing U.S. 17 road construction is planned for completion in the spring of 2013.
