Update March 24: The water main is nearly fixed but the buckled section of road will still need repair. The updated release from the Water System states, "For the afternoon rush hour, traffic flow on Savannah Highway will be diverted around the work as follows: There will be two southbound lanes (going out of town) and one northbound lane. However, delays are expected and motorists are encouraged to take an alternate route."

First reporting: Between a series of accidents and a broken 50-year-old water line, Savannah Highway at I-526 has been reduced to a trickle of traffic for most of the day.

Representatives with the Department of Transportation are assisting Charleston Water System with traffic control as only one southbound lane is open to traffic. 

Officials are promising an update by rush hour.

Oddly, another accident in downtown Charleston early this morning involved a flipped car and a broken water line.
