I've been sweating, you've been sweating. It's been a sticky mess around Charleston. And for once it's not that we've gotten fatter but that it's actually unusually warm in town.

(Well, we may be fatter, but it's still actually hotter. But I digress ... )

The National Weather Service  just put out a release saying that this the "... warmest June on record set in North Charleston, 2nd warmest June on record set in Savannah, and 3rd warmest June on record set in downtown Charleston ..."

Oh and that third-warmest record statistic stretches all the way back to 1870 in downtown Charleston.

Here's more details from the Service:

  • In North Charleston observations taken from the Charleston  airport indicate that June 2010 was the warmest June on record with a data history going back to 1938. The average temperature was 83.4 degrees for the month which is 5.2 degrees above the normal average temperature of 78.2 degrees. This eclipses the previous record for the warmest June on record of 82.8 degrees set in 1998. In addition 25 of the 30 days had a high temperature of 90 or above including 21 straight days from the 10th through the 30th.
  • In Savannah observations taken from the airport indicate that June 2010 was the 2nd warmest June on record with a data history going back to 1870. The average temperature was 83.6 degrees for the month which is 4.8 degrees above the normal average temperature of 78.8 degrees. This ties for the 2nd warmest June on record last set in 1952. In addition 25 of the 30 days had a high temperature of 90 or above including 20 straight days from the 10th through the 29th and the 14th had a high of 102 and the 15th had a high of 100.
  • In downtown Charleston observations taken at waterfront park indicate that June 2010 was the 3rd warmest June on record with a data history going back to 1870. The average temperature was 83.3 degrees for the month which is 3.9 degrees above the normal average temperature of 79.4 degrees. This ties for the 3rd warmest June on record last set in 1981.
