Today, The Charleston Area Regional Transportation Authority announced the “Get on the Bus” Business Challenge. The challenge will encourage local area businesses to support the use of mass transportation among employees for economic and environmental benefits.

Helping to lead the charge, College of Charleston President George Benson and Medical University of South Carolina Chief Operations Officer Stewart Mixon spoke at the press conference, encouraging local business participation. Local area leaders also attended, included Mayor Joe Riley and North Charleston Mayor Pro Tem Michael Brown.

“I am urging all area business to support CARTA and join this challenge,” said Mayor Joe Riley. “Public transportation is crucial to the Charleston area and the CARTA Business Challenge will certainly acquaint the community with the many benefits of CARTA.”

“Riding CARTA not only benefits the individual, but enables growth in our public transportation system, positively impacting the economy and environment while taking cars off the road,” said North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey. “By participating in this friendly competition, local businesses are encouraging their employees to make the small daily changes that can have real positive impacts for the long term.”

In support of CARTA, participating local area businesses will encourage their employees to ‘Get on the Bus’ and ride CARTA. At the end of the challenge, the business with the most passes sold and greatest employee participation will win free advertising on CARTA.

“Public transportation in our area is crucial for economic growth,” said CARTA Board Chairman Elliott Summey. “Support from local area businesses is essential in order for CARTA to continue to grow and expand its services to better serve the community.”

“The Business Challenge is a fun way to get businesses involved and learn more about the ways they can benefit as a company and how CARTA can work for them,” said Christine Wilkinson, CARTA Executive Director. “We have had a long partnership with MUSC and College of Charleston and we are excited for them to help us lead this challenge and exemplify the many benefits of CARTA.”
