Gaillard Auditorium proposed design remake draws flak (update: approval)

Update December 17, approval: Despite varied criticism the design remake of the Gaillard Municipal Auditorium has won its first and most important approval from Charleston's Board of Architectural Review.

The Post and Courier was at the meeting and has a nice summation of how things will proceed and criticism lobbied at the design.

The paper also has a sidebar that notes a bit of concern to get the project moving before construction costs begin to rise, an angle also noted on the project's website, which states: "the cost is expected to be 25% less than it would have been 3 years ago, and 11% less than 5 years hence."

First reporting December 9: In the first public presentation of a proposed $140 million remake of the Gaillard Municipal Auditorium on Calhoun Street, the design drew sharp remarks from the community for its "three-sided" design.

Though the design drew praise from Charleston Mayor Joe Riley, Preservation Society Director Evan Thompson had sharp words. At center is how the design would apparently interact with Anson and Alexander streets.

The Post and Courier has a solid report on the meeting and has some looks at the design; take a gander here.

If you'd like to weigh in or just follow along, the design goes before a special meeting of the Board of Architectural Review at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 16, at 75 Calhoun Street.

Update December 11: ABC News 4 has put together a nice video about the new structure and the debate with lots of good visuals, it's well worth a watch.

Watch it here.

Update December 16: The special meeting of the Board of Architectural Review to discuss the proposed plan for the Gaillard has been moved.

The new location is the ground floor exhibition hall at the Gaillard Municipal Auditorium. The meeting is still scheduled for today, December 16, at 4:30 p.m.
