Angie Buxton and Janie Manning partners of Sweet Charleston Designs bring their commitment to promoting educational awareness about the history of rice and Sweet Grass Basketry in the Lowcountry Basketry to the 3rd Grade Class at Mt. Pleasant Academy this coming Thursday.  Angie organized a hands on learning experience for students to get a close look at how Sweet Grass Baskets are created.  Mrs. Louise Jefferson, commonly referred to as "Granny" will demonstrate how to create baskets and share her family history with the children.

Buxton would like to see more programs in class rooms to include information about Sweet Grass Basketry and the history of Rice in America that will span all age groups.  She and Janie will be working inconjuction with activities surrounding Pan-African Fashion Week at North Carolina State University.  Manning met recently with a member of NCSU's cultural diversity program to discuss the roles history and historical artifacts play in todays textile and jewelry designs as a point of inspiration.
